sleet [sleet]
–noun
1. precipitation in the form of ice pellets created by the freezing of rain as it falls
sleet (slēt)
Precipitation that falls to earth in the form of frozen or partially frozen raindrops, often when the temperature is near the freezing point.
But, but... the temperature was only 43 degrees. Weird!
About as close to outdoors as I'm gonna get today as the remnants of Hurricane Hanna roll through our area dumping lots of rain.
Eh, it's good for the grass...
On an otherwise pleasant and sunny day, the skies suddenly turned dark and ominous and that humongous black cloud mass proceeded to empty itself of its load of water. We lost power instantaneously but rain in July is always welcome - it's good for the grass. ;)
We got a lovely break from the heat this evening as a thunderstorm rolled through. I was pleased to see that the water seal is working...

in a field somewhere and don't notice it."
Alice Walker
In spite of the wind and rain we've been having, our newly blooming rhododendron was just begging to kick off this week's purple theme.
Ah well, it's good for the grass. Makes the flowers grow. Replenishes the water table. Blah, blah, blah. Do we really need to make up for the drought all in one stinkin' week? And besides that, it's cold too!
Personally, I could do with a little more sun.
Since we're north of the city, our cherry blossoms start peaking about 3-4 weeks later than those in Washington, DC. We only planted our two trees 3 or 4 years ago, but they've produced massive amounts of blooms this season for our enjoyment. Even the rain and chillier temps of the past two days hasn't dampened (pardon the pun!) their beautiful display of fluffy pink.
In weather fit only for ducks and boats, I reverted to some playfulness and asked Lew to float one of the grandkids bath toys in our driveway "lake." Staying low (and dry!) on the porch, I imagined our much-in-need-of-a-mow grass as "shore growth," and got a miniature lakeside effect. Imaginary, of course. ;)
Cold and windy April showers were the order of the day, so the patio door was the extent of my outdoor ventures. This pool of water made a nice mirror.
Even though the wet weather is getting a bit tiresome the past two days, I couldn't help but notice how pretty nature's "teardrops" were on our weeping maple today. Kind of gave new meaning to its name! (a crying tree - not real funny, but a little humorous...) ;)
Another cold, rainy and dreary day in our parts but I still managed to grab some trios from inside the car as we drove about. The green shutters/lights (and raindrops!) are on the back of a Popeye's restaurant; the empty chairs looked mighty lonesome outside Starbucks; the 3-pipe culvert runs under a mall parking lot; and the windows are on the top front of the Casa-Rico Mexican restaurant.
After a couple of 100+ degree days, we enjoyed a respite from the stifling heat when a welcome summer thunderstorm came through. After turning ominously dark, the skies opened up and cooled things off delightfully. Hope it's cooled down where you all are too!!
... and make it real hard to take an outside picture! I wanted to get a shot of the clematis today, but Mother Nature had other ideas and was NOT cooperating. So, I got raindrops on the umbrella instead. Maybe tomorrow.
After a 90-some degree day, a much-needed thunderstorm blew through, cooling things down to 68 and watering the grass and plants for us. No dinner on the deck tonight!
